Drama KS3 Curriculum

In year 7, 8 and 9 students experience Drama twice a fortnight and work practically on building their theatrical skills as well as knowledge of theatre, communication, confidence, and teamwork.

Year 7
Term Topic
1 Title: Matilda

Learning aim: Students will perform a scripted scene using recognisable characters.

·         Understanding of stage areas and audience

·         Introduction to vocal and physical drama skills

·         Staying in character

2 Title: Julius Caesar

Learning aim: Students will perform their own devised scene using themes from Julius Caesar and elements of Greek theatre.

·         Exploration of Greek theatre

·         Improvisation skills

·         Understanding Shakespeare

·         Writing about performance ideas

3 &4 Title: Titanic

Learning aim: Students participating in a devising project based around themes from the Titanic.

·         Responding to a stimulus

·         Working in groups to adapt and refine own content

·         Writing a logbook of rehearsals

5 Title: Darkwood Manor

Learning aim: Storytelling unit looking at creating atmosphere and working in role. Students create their own play and design the lights and sound to build an entire performance.

·         How to build tension

·         Working and responding to teacher in role

·         Narration, proxemics and creation of atmosphere

6 Title: Commedia dell’arte

Learning aim: First exploration of comedy. Students to use scripted and devising skills to create a Commedia dell’arte inspired performance.

Year 8
Term Topic
1 Title: Macbeth

Learning aim: Explore script and non-naturalistic theatre. Students will perform a scripted piece.

·         Explore Shakespeare

·         Physical drama skills

·         Understanding of plot and character relationships

2 & 3 Title: Epic Theatre

Learning aim: Explore Epic Theatre and Brecht as a drama practitioner. Students to work on a long-term devising project to create a piece of Epic Theatre that focuses on social media.

·         Epic theatre techniques

·         Writing about a stimulus and their response

4 Title: An Inspector Calls

Learning aim: Students to explore a naturalistic script and perform a section from the play.

·         Seven levels of tension

·         Role on the wall

·         Different stage types

5 Title: Everybody’s talking about Jamie

Learning aim: To look at the process of creating a musical and other roles within theatre. Students will be assessed on their live theatre evaluation.

·         Exploring musical theatre

·         Describing drama skills in a piece of live theatre

·         Evaluating professional performance work

6 Title: Silent Movies

Learning aim: Students will explore mime and exaggeration to create their own silent movies with soundtrack.

·         Deepen understanding of physical skills and mime

·         Silent movie archetypes and techniques

·         Writing about how they developed their scenes

 

Year 9
Term Topic
1 Title: Out of Control

Learning aim: exploring and challenging stereotypes and creating drama from scripts outside of their usual comfort zone.

·       Stage directions

·       Using techniques learnt in year 7 and 8 (thought tracking, canon, unison)

·       Describing how actors use vocal and physical skills to create a character

2 Title: Romeo & Juliet

Learning aim: explore the play through different dramatic techniques and deepen their understanding of the plot and language

·       Plot and Shakespearean language

·       Exploring key scenes with drama techniques e.g tableaux.

·       Exploring themes of friendship

 

3 Title: Blood Brothers

Learning aim: Students to apply script skills from previous years to perform a scene from the play.

·       Characterisation

·       Applying context and playwright’s intentions

4 Title: Curious Incident of the dog in the night-time

Learning aim: To explore scripted physical theatre and different character types. Students have a chance to work as a main character or within an ensemble.

·       Working in groups to create a scripted physical performance.

·       Learning about ASD

·       Using scripted scenes to create a character or ensemble part

5 Title: Physical Theatre

Learning aim: Students to explore a new style of creating and performing through more physical storytelling. Students produce a short play using physical theatre to tell a story.

6  Title: Live Theatre Evaluation

Learning aim: To develop their understanding of how a production is created and be able to describe, analyse and evaluate the end product. Written assessment.

·       Describe the vocal and physical skills used by the actors on stage.

·       Analyse the acting and design choices.

·       Evaluate the performance and give their own personal interpretation.
