What does the course cover?
Throughout the course, you will explore a range of different scripts and styles of theatre as well as creating your own work in your preferred style. You are also offered the option to be assessed as a designer focusing on sound, light, costume (including hair and makeup) or set.
Component 1: Drama and Theatre · Practical exploration and study of two complete set texts focusing on how these can be realised for performance. Questions are answered from the perspective of a performer, director and designer. · Live theatre evaluation. You will have the opportunity to watch several different plays throughout the course.
Component 2: Creating original drama · Devise an original performance piece from stimuli and apply the methodologies of a theatre practitioner. · Keep a working journal, documenting the devising process. · Performer or designer routes available.
Component 3: Making theatre · Practically explore and interpret three scripts. You will apply a theatre practitioner to the third extract which is performed for a live audience. · Reflective report evaluating your theatrical interpretation of the script. · Performer or designer routes available. |
What skills will the course help you develop?
Studying Drama will help you understand how one text can be interpreted in multiple ways. Students will develop a multitude of skills, including collaboration, communication and an understanding of how to amend and refine work, in order to make a smooth transition to their next level of study or employment. It will also help you develop a wider knowledge of theatre and how it is created. |
How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed in much the same way as the GCSE. Unit two and three will be a combination of performance and written coursework worth 60%. The written exam is worth 40%. |
What do students who study this course go on to do?
Students who study this course have gone on to attend Drama schools, University or straight into employment with acting or coaching. It supports English Literature when studying a text and understanding multiple interpretations, as well as Media and Film studies. It will prepare students for employment, especially where presentations and collaborative work is essential. |
