Primary girls’ teams meet for football tournament
Girls’ football teams from local primary schools gathered at The Bicester School to compete in the North Oxfordshire School Partnership’s Year 5/6 Girls’ Football Tournament. The event was designed to promote sport-specific skills and celebrate achievement in girls’ football.
On Thursday, November 7, ten teams from five local primary schools – Brookside, Chesterton, Kings Meadow, Southwold, and St Edburg’s – participated, with a total of 80 students taking part. The tournament was an open event, with schools in the cluster encouraged to sign up following an intra-school competition. Each participating school entered two teams, making for a vibrant and competitive morning of football.
In addition to the players, the event also provided a valuable leadership opportunity for TBS’s Year 8 and Year 9 girls. These students, many of whom are passionate about football both inside and outside of school, took on roles as referees, assistant referees, and scorekeepers, providing excellent role models for the younger participants.
A total of 45 games were played on the TBS field, with Brookside A emerging as the tournament champions, taking first place. Chesterton A secured second place, with both teams earning a spot in the upcoming partnership final, where they will compete against the top teams from other regional cluster events.
The tournament was hailed as a great success, not only in terms of sport and competition but also in fostering a sense of achievement and community among girls in the local area.
This was the school’s first School Sport Coordinator (SSCO) event of the year. SSCOs are responsible for implementing School Sport Partnership (SSP) plans for primary schools in their area.
