Wheely good news for cycling!
A supercalifragilistic expialidocious donation of 20 bikes gave extra zippadeedoodah to The Bicester School’s annual Disney Race for Life!
Taking place on October 12, the event brought together more than 70 students and staff who took part in the after school event dedicated to fitness, community and cycling!
This year’s event featured a new special addition: school-funded bikes thanks to Active Oxfordshire. The 20 bikes, donated over the summer, were available for students to use during the race – which they loved!
PE teacher Sarah Masterson secured a grant from Active Oxfordshire (community active travel fund) earlier in the year of just under £4,000 to get the second-hand bikes integrated into the school’s fitness club, the weekly mile. Some need a bit of attention, but that’s part of the fun of it!
Mr. Bridge, a science teacher at The Bicester School, said: “We are really excited about the plans we have for the bikes. We have secured a longer-term storage solution in an adjacent building, which will allow us to run maintenance workshops. It also allows the bikes to be more accessible.”
The new storage facility provides a secure place for the bikes, making them readily available for students who wish to use them.
The aim of the bike programme is also to support students who don’t currently have access to bikes of their own. “The plan was always to use the bikes, for students who don’t currently have access to a bike and would like to borrow one for traveling to school,” Mr. Bridge explained.
Kiera Hudson (Student Ambassador of Change) said: “All bikes have been named and branded after various students and staff, thanks to Katelyn Hazlewood who is also an ambassador. Many students enjoy using these bikes as they add a bit of ‘jazz’ and make the weekly mile more interesting.”
