Our Sixth Form Travel & Tourism students recently enjoyed an unforgettable trip to the FlyMe Aviation Centre and Skills Street near Sheffield, immersing themselves in a full day of hands-on aviation experiences and career exploration.
The visit gave students a realistic insight into the aviation industry, combining practical activities, teamwork challenges and career-focused learning. One of the highlights was the chance to take part in an aircraft evacuation and safety briefing simulation, where students worked together inside a life raft while wearing life jackets, gaining an understanding of cabin crew responsibilities and in-flight safety procedures.
Students also explored the FlyMe flight simulators, stepping into the roles of pilots and experiencing what it’s like to fly a Boeing 737 from the cockpit. Guided by experienced instructors & pilots, they learned how pilots manage controls, communicate with crew and make critical decisions during flight.
At Skills Street, students rotated through a range of interactive zones designed to mirror real workplace environments. These activities helped develop key employability skills such as communication, problem-solving and leadership, while also highlighting the wide range of careers available within aviation and the travel industry — from pilots and cabin crew to ground operations and customer service roles.
This experience was a fantastic opportunity to bring classroom learning to life and support students as they consider their future career options. A huge thank you to the FlyMe and Skills Street teams, especially Roy and James, for delivering such an engaging and memorable day.
