KS3 ART

“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep” – Scott Adams.

The Art department is led by four main teachers, each qualified within various practices within Art and Design.

Our team is dedicated to deliver a fully inclusive curriculum, with focus on a variety of cultural and social themes throughout the Key Stages.

In KS3, students will have three lessons a fortnight, in mixed ability groups, where they will follow a programme of study that builds skills, understanding and knowledge in a wide range of art forms including drawing, developing use of colour, 3D work and looking at existing art from a wide range of sources. This gives the students an excellent grounding and will enable them to be prepared with a skillset to confidently apply at KS4 for GCSE.

We encourage students to understand the intentions of artwork, to face technical challenges with resilience, and to think freely. In this way, students develop artistic skills that prepare them for their future and enable them to become creative thinkers.

          Title: Colour
Learning and Materials: Students explore colour theory, tonal painting and communicating emotions through colour. They explore cross-curricular combining maths and art, with focus on numeracy.

          Title: Portraiture (realistic and abstract)
Learning and Materials: Students learn how to draw accurately and in proportion, whereby they learn how to draw facial features, which in turn, through interleaving knowledge acquired during Term 1 & 2, will develop into a realistic self-portrait. Student’s will learn about Abstract portraiture and varying viewpoints and create an abstract self-portrait to complement their realistic one, with application of prior colour theory knowledge.

Artists: Students may research Natalie Foss, Vince Low, Chuck Close, Pablo Picasso

          Title: View Through a Door
Learning and Materials: Students explore the work of ancient and modern Surrealist art and look at the idea of hybrid creatures. They learn to use one point perspective to give the illusion of an open door and then research, plan and develop a highly individual and imaginative scene showing a monster in a doorway. Tonal painting skills are built on and texture and tone are the focus of the second half of the project.

Artists: Students may research Hieronymus Bosch, Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte
