MOST ABLE STUDENTS
Rationale: At TBS, we aim to support every student in developing their individual talents—intellectually, creatively, and emotionally. Our teaching is designed to be challenging, engaging, and focused on helping all learners reach their full potential.
Aims: We are committed to meeting the needs of our most academically able students through a broad, stimulating curriculum that:
- Builds their knowledge and core skills
- Encourages problem-solving and creativity
- Fosters intellectual curiosity and independent thinking
We consider prior knowledge, aptitude, and progression across key stages. We also build links with organisations such as Oxford University to further extend opportunities.
Identification: Each year, we identify a cohort of our most able students based on standardised test data (e.g. SATs, CATs, FFT scores).
Curriculum strategies: We use a variety of teaching approaches that encourage risk-taking and deep thinking. Setting is used in most subjects from Year 7, and in option subjects at KS4 where appropriate.
In-Class Provision: We support our most able learners through:
- Flexible grouping
- Mentoring and tailored support
- Enrichment and extension activities
- Stretch and challenge within lessons
- Higher-order questioning and thinking skills
- Opportunities for independent learning and self-evaluation
