3rd–5th October, Bibury to Kemble, Cotswolds
Over the weekend of 3rd–5th October, 35 brave Silver DofE participants took on their qualifying expedition through the rolling hills of the Cotswolds — and, as it turned out, the full force of Storm Amy!
The group set off from Bibury on Friday morning in high spirits (and, thankfully, dry socks). Those dry socks didn’t last long — the heavens opened and the first day quickly turned into a test of teamwork, perseverance and waterproofing. By the time tents were pitched, everyone was thoroughly acquainted with the concept of “character building weather.”
Saturday morning saw Mrs Withers’ trusty van transformed into a makeshift laundrette — socks, jackets and coats hanging from every surface in an effort to reverse Friday’s downpours. Spirits remained high, though, with two birthdays to celebrate — Lily (on Friday) and Freya (on Sunday) celebrated in true expedition style, complete with inflatable crown, giant 16 badge, cake and candles taped to vaccum packed expedition food! And of course, the enthusiastic singing from the boys!
The group continued their trek through wet and windy conditions, showcasing impressive navigation skills, excellent teamwork and some creative vlogging from Seb S-P, who captured the highs, lows, Rocco’s finest moments, Teq and Caleb’s singing and gusts of the weekend on camera. Three tents unfortunately met their match against the strong winds, but the resilience (and humour) of the groups never wavered.
Among the many highlights were five intrepid girls who proudly “scaled a mountain” — or at least a very steep hill, certainly higher than anything they’d find back home in Oxfordshire! There were also two budding romances, as Jasper and Isla and Ioannis and Ellie, brought a touch of young romance to the otherwise windswept weekend.
By Sunday, as the expeditioners reached Kemble, the rain finally eased and the smiles were brighter than ever. Everyone passed with flying colours, finishing tired but triumphant — and (hopefully) ready to take on Gold next year.
The weekend was a perfect mix of laughter, resilience, soggy socks and hot chocolates shared in the back of Mrs Withers’ van. A huge congratulations to all 35 students for completing their Silver DofE expedition in truly unforgettable conditions!
